Skinny Old Fashioned Cocktail
I first came across an Old Fashioned at a restaurant a few years ago with something they called an ‘Aspen Old Fashioned.’ It was amazing. Super sweet, made with whiskey, and had strong flavors of both cherry and orange.
As I ventured into trying more traditional Old Fashioneds, I found that I really liked them too, but could never quite find that same fruity, sweet flavor that I liked so much.
This skinny version of the Old Fashioned is just that! The sparkling water adds the cherry and orange flavors. It also adds sweetness without adding sugar. The bourbon adds a smoky flavor, while adding its own sweetness. If you haven’t tried an Old Fashioned, start with this one!
Start with a good quality bourbon. There are many to choose from, but my favorite bourbon of the moment is Bulleit. My husband and I got to tour their facility and try many of their bourbons. All were excellent. This drink works well with both the regular Bulleit Bourbon or the Bulleit Rye.
The key to this drink is to use a sparkling water that adds a little sweetness. I use a grocery store brand flavored water, not something like La Croix or Bubly. Those are both excellent waters on their own (and make a mean drink!) but I like the sweetness that the artificial waters provide. This adds the sweetness without adding any sugars to your drink. Be sure to find one that has zero calories and zero sugar.
Finish this drink by squeezing one of the orange slices in, then stir. This adds freshness to it and really brings out the orange flavor in the water. Garnish with an orange and cherries, or muddle them in the glass before you begin. Either way, it is delicious!
